GLASSBORO — The Glassboro police department will host its annual Senior Citizens’ Holiday Dinner on Sunday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m.

A tradition for more than 40 years, the dinner will be held at the Bullock School on East New Street.

Seniors will be treated for a turkey dinner served by borough police officers and their families. Those who attend will enjoy door prizes and favors and holiday carols sung by some officers and other special guests.

The dinner is made possible by generous donations from the Italian Affair, the Glassboro Municipal Alliance. Navar Vending Services and the Glassboro Board of Education.

Those wishing to attend should RSVP the police department between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at 856-881-1501, ext. 88112.

WOODBURY HEIGHTS — Rain didn't dampen the holiday spirit in Woodbury Heights Saturday, Dec. 6, as the borough's Christmas tree was illuminated and Santa Claus himself showed up to meet with folks in the town's newly rebuilt fire house.

Pitman man charged with claiming he had a gun in Glassboro

GLASSBORO — A man who claimed he had a gun and wanted to “do what police are doing around the country” was arrested shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

The man allegedly entered a store on Dalton Drive and told the employees he had a chrome-plated .45-caliber handgun, police said.

When police arrived, all three employees of the business had evacuated and told officers what had happened, said police. Officers found the man, Ronnie Giberson, 57, of Pitman, still in the business. He did not have a weapon, said police.

Giberson was charged with false public alarm and disorderly conduct, served with complaint summonses and released.

WOODBURY — A Sewell man charged with murdering a 30-year-old Gibbstown man by driving over him twice on a Paulsboro street on May 18 was denied a requested five-fold reduction in his $500,000 bail on Friday, Dec. 5.

The lawyer for Robert Springer, 26, claimed there may be “elements of mitigation” in the case, authorities said.

Attorney Leonard Grasso asked Superior Court Judge M. Christine Allen-Jackson to lower his client’s bail to $50,000. Grasso said Springer, a graduate of the Gloucester County Institute of Technology who is on Social Security disability, has been in jail for six months.

Bail reduction denied in robbery of Woodbury pizza shop

WOODBURY — A Collingswood man on Friday, Dec. 5, was denied a bail reduction on charges he robbed a pizza shop and punched a female employee in the face.

Dana M. Mulvany, 44, is in jail in lieu of $75,000 bail since he was arrested, following the robbery of the store in Woodbury on Nov. 15, authorities said.

WOODBURY HEIGHTS — The Woodbury Heights Annual Tree Lighting will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

The tree is at Elm and West Jersey avenues.

Residents are invited to come celebrate the holiday with neighbors and hear seasonal music fro the Woodbury Heights Elementary School Chorus.

WOODBURY — A Gloucester County grand jury indicted the following people the week of Dec. 1:

— Jerome W. Shockley, 36, of Westville, for possession of a controlled dangerous substance on July 14 in West Deptford.

— Danielle S/ Leonard, 42, of Newfield, for theft by unlawful taking, criminal mischief, falsifying records and theft by deception in Newfield on dates between April and June.

CLAYTON — The Office of Land Preservation will be launching a new Gloucester County Certified Gardener program.

This new group will receive a minimum of 50 hours of training in a variety of horticultural topics taught by leaders in the industry, officials said.

In exchange for the training, participants will be asked to volunteer 60 hours with the program.
