PITMAN — Two police officers and a new K-9 unit will be taking to Pitman’s streets in March — and none too soon, according to Police Chief Robert Zimmerman.

In 2014 alone, police have made 108 drug arrests, 25 drug distribution arrests, had 86 drug evidence cases, executed nine drug search warrants and made 13 search warrant arrests, said Zimmerman.

There were four heroin overdose deaths in the borough, eight investigations involving alleged firearms and six investigations involving known gang members, he said.

“We have seen an influx of illegal drug activity in our community,” Zimmerman said, “Drugs, such as heroin and the illegal use of prescription medications, in addition to marijuana and others are extremely prevalent.”

Zimmerman said his “experienced” detectives and “young go-getters” in the patrol division have been doing a phenomenal job in recent years.

The chief said he sees support from the community in tangible ways, such as the $70,000 raised to create Pitman’s first K-9 unit.

“I have made it a primary focus to eradicate these drugs and to remove the dealers from the streets of Pitman,” said Zimmerman.

LOGAN TWP.

— On Jan. 16, police received a trespassing complaint on Center Square Road. The accused, a Woodstown man, was identified and advised that complaints will be signed if he returns.

— Officers investigated a report of a fight at the Village Pub prior to closing on Jan. 17. Two unidentified females created a disturbance inside and outside the bar when they were asked to leave. Attempts to locate them were unsuccessful.

I’m not sure when it started, exactly. I just know that I have wanted a leather coat for a very long time.

No, not just any leather jacket — I’ve had an aviator or flight jacket for many years.

A coat, like a sport coat or a car coat.

In the 1960s, I bought an extremely expensive (well, $55) buckskin jacket. Not with extraordinarily long fringe, but with reasonable fringe. Much more like a frontier garment than a hippie jacket. But that was buckskin, a sort of suede, not really leather.

I do know that when I was living in Berlin (Germany) I went to a thrift shop called Second-Hand Rose and spotted a burgundy leather sport coat. I took it from its hanger and tried it on. It fit perfectly. Even the wrinkles at the inside of the elbows were in the right spot.

PAULSBORO — Michael J. Joyner, 32, wanted for violating his parole, was arrested Jan. 23 by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office Fugitive Investigation Unit and the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

Joyner fled when officers approached, but they apprehended him in a wooded area behind his most recent address on Baird Avenue in Paulsboro, authorities said.

In addition to the parole violation, Joyner was charged with resisting arrest and possession of narcotics — nine glassine bags of suspected crack cocaine, said authorities.

Joyner was turned over to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department and will be held without bail, authorities said.

Joyner was paroled May 29, 2013 from a five-year state prison term for narcotics charges, said authorities.

WOODBURY — All six Gloucester County Senior Nutrition Sites and the Serv-A-Tray program will be closed Tuesday, Jan 28 because of the impending snow storm.

Serve-A-Tray clients were served an additional meal today so they have food for tomorrow.

The county Division of Transportation Services will perform transports only for dialysis patients and those whp have life-sustaining appointments Tuesday. All other transports will be rescheduled.

WASHINGTON TWP. — A Williamstown man has been charged with robbery in connection with a holdup of the Pantry 1 store in the 200 block of Pitman Downer Road on Jan. 17.

The robber was armed and got away with cash from the register, police said.

An investigation spanned three jurisdictions as a result of Westville and Gloucester City having similar robberies, said police.

Christopher Reinek, 35, was arrested on Jan. 23 and was committed to the Salem County Jail in default of a unspecified amount of bail, police said.

WOOLWICH TWP. — A ‘chemical lab mishap’ has sent more than two dozen Kingsway Regional High School students to the hospital, according to Channel 6 Action News.

The accident occurred at around 8 a.m. Students were evacuated into the cold until they could be moved safely into the middle school.

According to the report, at least 25 students were sent to Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa. as a precaution and for evaluation.

It’s reported smoke-filled hallways are being vented.

GLASSBORO — A 19-year-old Rowan University freshman was shot in both legs at about 1 a.m. Sunday, Jan.25 near the F Building in the  Campus Crossings apartment complex.

The victim, Anayochukwu Logan Iloabanafor, was transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was treated and later released, police said. Iloabanafor, is from Bergenfield, but lives in Mimosa Hall on campus, authorities said.

Witnesses reported seeing someone firing several shots from the passenger side of a vehicle before fleeing the scene, said police. The vehicle was stopped by Gloucester Township police and two occupants transported to Glassboro police department, police said.

GLASSBORO — A Rowan University freshman who was shot early Sunday in an off-campus apartment complex was alert when transported to Cooper University Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to university officials.

Anayochukwu Logan Iloabanafor, who lives in Bergenfield but is a resident of Mimosa Hall on campus, was visiting in Campus Crossings when he  was shot at about 1 a.m., according to messages sent out by the university.

Glassboro police sent out information about the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro with silver racing stripes and a male in the car who may have had a silver or black revolver, authorities said. Gloucester Township police found the car, stopped it and took two suspects into custody.

Glassboro police are waiting for a search warrant so they can get inside the car.
