The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities hit a milestone when its Comfort Partners Program surpassed 90,000 homes made more energy efficient since its launch in 2001.

The Comfort Partners Program is available to any New Jersey household with significant energy use, having an income at or below 225% of the federal poverty guidelines.

Households that receive USF, Lifeline and/or Pharmaceutical Assistance to the Aged and Disabled (PAAD) are also eligible.

WOODBURY —A special presentation on ‘Diet for a Healthy Heart’ will be given at three of Gloucester County’s nutrition sites during the month of February.

The presentation by the county health department’s Dietician Kathleen Mahmoud will focus on the latest guidelines from the American Heart Association. A nurse will also be at the nutrition sites on the day of
the presentation to offer free blood pressure screening.

MONROE TWP. — Several Monroe Township police officers will be participating in a charity basketball game on Jan. 30.

The event is called Hoops for Hunger and police, fire, emergency medical services and public leaders will take part to raise money for families in need in the municipality.

It’s scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 30 and is being coordinated by Holly Glenn School, 900 N. Main St., Williamstown.

HARRISON TWP. — Inspira Health Network has announced an affiliation with Thomas Jefferson University and Health System (Jefferson) that will provide a new level of specialty health care services to residents in South Jersey.

The affiliation will expand several of Inspira’s key clinical programs by linking community physicians with Jefferson sub specialists involved in related clinical and research activities. As part of the new relationship Inspira and Jefferson will collaborate to develop a jointly owned and staffed ambulatory care facility to be built in Gloucester County.

WOODBURY — Gloucester County has launched what’s called GC2040: Let’s Talk, a public survey to discuss how the county should grow in the next 25 years.

The results of the survey will be used to update the Land Use and Transportation elements of the county’s Master Plan, providing a blueprint for the county’s future growth and development. The Master Plan will represent the vision of the public – those who live, work, or play in Gloucester County.

EAST GREENWICH TWP. — Firefighters and an ambulance crew were dispatched at 11 p.m. Monday for a commercial vehicle crash on Interstate 295 North at Exit 18.

According to the fire department’s Facebook page, a tractor trailer loaded with frozen food had overturned coming up the ramp. The driver had gotten himself out with minor injuries, but the saddle tanks full of diesel fuel had ruptured.

Crews built an earthen dam to contain the leaking fuel.

Riehl’s Towing assisted with draining the remaining fuel from the tanks and uprighting the rig.

New Jersey State Police are investigating the accident.

East Greenwich and Greenwich township police, the Office of Emergency Management and the state Department of Transportation also were on scene.

PITMAN — A Mantua man was arrested Sunday in connection with a burglary in Pitman.

On Saturday, Jan. 17, at 5:17 p.m., police responded to a call for a suspicious person in the 300 block of Lexington Avenue.

According to the caller, an unknown male was walking around the yard of a vacant residence. The male was not located by police at the time of the call.

On Sunday, Jan. 18 at  1:24 p.m., Ptl. Ken Decker was proactively patrolling in the 300 block of Lexington Avenue when he spotted a red van in the driveway where the suspicious person had been seen the day before, said police.

The man, wearing a partial black mask and a black “beanie” cap, was kneeling by the side of the house pulling pipes out of the basement, police said. The man was arrested by Decker.

Sgt Thomas Zander and officers from Mantua Township arrived to help check the inside of the house, said police.

Officers discovered that several lengths of copper pipe had been cut from the water lines inside the house, police said.

Matthew Kearney, 27, wash charged with burglary, theft and criminal mischief and was lodged in the Salem County Jail in lieu of $50,000 full-cash bail.

I noted with some interest recently that Rowan University is renaming its College of Engineering for Henry Rowan.

This came as a surprise to me, since I thought everything already was named for Rowan.

Rowan University. Rowan Boulevard. Rowan College at Gloucester County. The Rowan brand is spreading. I wouldn’t be the least surprised if somewhere down the line Glassboro changes its name to Collegetown or Rowanburg or Henryville.

Henry Rowan gave Glassboro State College $100 million back in 1992. According to what I remember and what I have read, that helped start the engineering school. Now, with his most recent gift of $15 million, he gets his name on it.

Rich people like their names on things. There’s Rohrer College of Business, named for William Rohrer, who donated $10 million.

FRANKLIN TWP. — The 68-year-old Catawba Avenue man who’d been reported missing on Jan. 17 was located Monday, Jan. 19 by Detective Jeffrey McGuigan.

Richard Souza had not been heard from since Jan. 5, according to family members. Relatives were concerned for his safety, since he has recently been diagnosed with dementia, police said.

Souza was located staying at a motel in Buena, said police. He was transported to Inspira Hospital, Vineland.

New Jersey State Police from Buena Barracks helped with the investigation, police said.
