WOODBURY — A Gloucester County grand jury indicted the following people the week of Feb. 23:

—Elvis McPhill Jr., 30, of Rosedale, N.Y., for possession of more than 50 grams of marijuana and distribution of more than five an ounce and less than five pounds of marijuana in Harrison Township on Nov. 14.

— Kim A. Labinski, 49, of Monroeville, for possession of CDS and eluding in Elk Township on Oct. 3.

— Brian W. Hampton, 50, of Westville, for aggravated assault with bodily injury in Westville on Aug. 16.

— Christa L. Gentile, 45, of Gibbstown, for shoplifting and hindering prosecution in Mantua on Oct. 25.

— Ryan J. Genevieve, 21, of Monroe Township, for resisting arrest in Glassboro on Nov. 21.

PAULSBORO — A Swedesboro Avenue man was arrested Thursday following a several-week investigation into the sale of illegal drugs and the illegal possession of weapons.

At 1 p..m. Feb. 26, police and members of the U.S. Marshal’s Service Counter Gang Unit, the Gloucester County Special Weapons and Tactics team and a Logan Township police K-9 unit executed a search warrant at the residence of Thomas Grey, 27, said police.As a result of the search warrant one arrest was made;

Grey was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of CDS with the intent to distribute within 500 feet of public housing, possession of CDS with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a firearm while committing a CDS offense, distribution of drug paraphernalia, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to surrender CDS to a law enforcement officer, loitering to commit a CDS offense, maintaining a nuisance and being an unregistered tenant in a rental property, police said. Additional complaints have been filed for the registered tenant and the landlord, said police.

Grey was committed to the Salem County Jail in default of 10% of $50,000 bail, police said.

WOODBURY — According to information provided by the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, Ellis Hester, 58, of Gibbstown was ordered Friday to put his house on the market and sell his 1998 Mercedes-Benz to help pay restitution to 20 customers of his now-defunct Williamstown travel agency who paid for a 2011 Mediterranean cruise they never took because he kept their money.

“I should have sent you to state prison,”  Superior Court Judge M. Christine Allen-Jackson told Hester at an ability-to-pay hearing. “If you have not put forth every effort to get that house sold, you go to jail.”

The costs associated with obtaining a K-9 for a police department often prevent  local agencies from getting a dog. But that was before 4 Heroes was created.

The charity is the brainchild of Les Whinna, a retired Camden K-9 officer who’s the president of the Rolling Badges Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, and Washington Township reconstructive surgeon Dr. Frederick LeVan, who is an honorary member of Rolling Badges.

Members of Rolling Badges were looking for ways to give back to the community, said Whinna’s daughter, Daneen, who is president of 4 Heroes.

“My dad has such a love for K-9s and for dogs in general, we wanted to help,” Daneen said. The charity is aimed at four hero groups: police, fire, military and first responders.

The 4 Heroes group was created last summer.

One revenue source has been LeVan’s offer to do procedures for any member of the four hero groups and give a portion of his fee to 4 Heroes. (For legal reasons, he’s not allowed to discount procedures covered by insurance. The give-back works only with out-of-pocket procedures.)

The first mission for 2015 was to give back K-9s, said Daneen.

The group arranged for Glassboro police to replace K-9 Anka, who was killed after being spooked by fireworks last July. Ptl. Chuck Williams is in the Philadelphia Police K-9 Academy with Jesse, a dog donated by 4 Heroes. The organization also donated other items for the dog, including a bullet-resistant vest. Williams and Jesse are currently undergoing scent/narcotics training and will graduate March 19.

LOGAN TWP.

— A Paulsboro Road residenr reported on Feb. 16 that her 32-year-old son stole $200 from her, in an effort to sustain his drug habit. He was picked up a short time later by Camden County authorities and found to be in possession of $200 cash. Complaints are pending.

— On Feb. 18, officers charged a 26-year-old Camden man with receiving stolen property and possession of marijuana during a vehicle stop on Center Square Road. The 2002 Mazda he was driving allegedly had been stolen in Camden.  Maurice English was additionally charged with obstruction of justice, lewdness and improper behavior based on his actions when arrested and being processed. He was committed to the Salem County Jail in deault of $25,000 full-cash bail.

WOODBURY —  Gloucester County Sheriff Carmel Morina announced today that on Feb. 24 The Gloucester County Fugitive Unit apprehended fugitive Jason Walko, who was #8 on the Sheriff’s Most Wanted List.  

Walko was arrested at his girlfriend’s home in Mantua without incident.  Walko was wanted on an outstanding Superior Court Warrant for failure to appear on Aug. 11. His original charge was resisting arrest. Walko was lodged in the Salem County Jail afterprocessing.

This brings the total to 96 fugitives that have been apprehended from the Sheriff’s Department 10 Most Wanted List since its inception in January 2010.

WOODBURY— Officers of the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office have arrested a Deptford man wanted on sexual battery charges in Virginia and  two other men who failed to appear in Superior Court in Woodbury on local criminal charges.

Taken into custody Feb. 23 in the unit block of Bruce Drive in Deptford was Daniel G. Simon, 57.  He was indicted on two counts of sexual battery on Dec. 17 stemming from an incident alleged to have occurred Jan. 4, 1982.

The Camden Division of  the U.S. Marshals Service received a lead from its Capital Area counterpart on Simon’s whereabouts. Marshals and a member of the Prosecutor’s Fugitive Investigations Unit arrested him at his residence. He is being held in default of $200,000 bail pending an extradition hearing.

GLASSBORO — Seven Rowan University students were arrested Wednesday Feb. 25 during a search that concluded a month-long investigation into the sale of marijuana, police said.

A search warrant was executed at 6:20 a.m. at 46 N. Delsea Drive by the Glassboro Special Investigations Unit/

Fifty grams of marijuana, drug paraphernalia and $2,385 in cash was seized by officers, said police.

Raghav Dave, 21, of Galloway Township, was charged with possession of 50 grams or more of marijuana, possession of 50 grams or more of marijuana with the intent to distribute, possession of marijuana within 1,000 feet of the Glassboro Intermediate School and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said.
