SOUTH HARRISON TWP. — Gloucester County Freeholder Director Robert M. Damminger announced the dates for the County’s 2015 Household Special Waste (HSW)Collection Program with the first date in April.

The HSW Program is a series of periodic collection events conducted at specified locations where Gloucester County residents can drop-off their old oil-based paint, motor oil, antifreeze, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs, fluorescent tubes, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, and similar materials for recycling, reuse, and/or proper disposal. 

Latex paint is not accepted and must be dried out with kitty litter and placed in the regular trash. 

This is a free service for Gloucester County residents.  Businesses are not permitted to participate.

WEST DEPTFORD TWP.

— On March 2, Ryan J. Palmer, 32, of West Deptford, was arrested on outstanding warrants and charged with hindering his own apprehension. He was processed and released.

— Megan A. Carpenter, 30, of Bellmawr, was arrested on March 2 on Crown Point Road and charged with driving while intoxicated. She was served with a complaint summons and released.

— Geniene M. Ward, 46, of Mount Ephraim, and Michael D. Mellon, 45, of Williamstown, were arrested March 3 at the Rainbow Inn and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. They were processed and released.

WOODBURY — A 41-year-old Woodbury man was found guilty Tuesday of selling oxycodone pills on two dates in January 2013 to an undercover narcotics officer.

George S. Jackson was also convicted of the separate offense of making the sales within 500 feet of a Woodbury public park, authorities said.

In all, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all counts of an eight-count indictment, the most serious of which were the charges of distribution near a park.

Superior Court Judge Robert P. Becker revoked Jackson’s bail and set sentencing for April 24. Jackson did not appear for court while the jury was deliberating and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

WOODBURY  — On Monday, the Fugitive Investigations Unit of the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office arrested a Glassboro man who failed to appear in Superior Court in Woodbury on Feb. 27 for sentencing on a charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

Arthur J. Matsinger, 21, was taken into custody without incident at a residence in the 300 block of Lakeside Drive, Glassboro, on a warrant issued after his non-appearance in court. He was turned over to the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department.

Matsinger pleaded guilty on Jan. 20 to the charge of possession of under 50 grams of marijuana with intent to distribute in Elk Township on Aug. 18, authorities said.

Assisting in the arrest were the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department Fugitive Unit and the Sheriff’s Department K-9 team.

WOODBURY — In a one-day trial in Superior Court, a U.S. Secret Service agent testified he determined $410 in $20 and $50 bills seized in the arrest of Ryan T. Martin and an associate were counterfeit.

Martin, 30, of Pitman was found guilty Tuesday of passing counterfeit bills and altering currency.

Daylight Saving Time has arrived and we grow ever closer to that time of the year known as “Yecchh! Winter! Go away!”

I know that’s not an official time of year, but it works for me, and it does come before spring.

I don’t like winter. Haven’t liked winter in as long as I can remember.

I’m sure I must have liked winter at some point. I have memory snippets of me coming into the house soaked to the skin after cavorting in the snow. The memory snippets do not include information about whether I was having a good time or not.

One winter around 1970 or so, I was living in Upper Darby, Pa. and working at a radio station in West Chester, Pa., which was a commute of 25 miles each way. I woke up to a heavy snow storm one morning — I had to get up at 3 a.m. or thereabouts. I got in my car and drove toward 69th Street, thinking I’d park my car and take a bus to work. Parked the car and realized the public lot I was in used parking meters and I would quickly get a ticket and maybe even get towed while I was broadcasting the news 25 miles away.

GREENWICH TWP. — During a vehicle stop  near Swedesboro Avenue and Berkley Road Monday, officers suspected the driver, who was operating on a suspended licenses, and occupants were concealing CDS, police said.

Township K-9 Kilo alerted on the outside of the vehicle for possible narcotics. Officers learned both occupants were wanted on outstanding warrants, said police.

Ammeerah Malika Miles-Benjamin, 30, of Paulsboro, and Quadon J. Pratt, 26, also of Paulsboro, were charged with possession of CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia, failure to surrender CDS to a law enforcement officer and the outstanding warrants. Both were served with complaint summonses and released.

GREENWICH TWP. —Officers were alerted to two suspicious males walking on Swedesboro Avenue at 05:48 a.m. today.

It was learned that both men were wanted on several outstanding criminal warrants from Pennsville and Gloucester City, police said.

James E. Derrick, 35, of Pennsville, was arrested on the warrants, said police.

Stephen D. Donnelly, 30, of Gloucester City, allegedly had several hypodermic syringes and drug paraphernalia in his possession, so he was arrested for possession and for the outstanding warrants, police said.

Both men were committed to the Salem County Jail in default of unspecified amounts of bail.

WASHINGTON TWP. — Two people were injured in a crash at the intersection of Hurffville-Cross Keys  Road and Kings Way East Saturday afternoon.

A 2001 Hyundai Sonata headed south on Hurffville-Cross Keys Roadat abut 12:23 p.m crossed over the double yellow lines to the left, into the northbound lane, police said.

At the same time, a 2010 Ford Explorer traveling north tried to move to the left to avoid the Hyundai, but the Hyundai’s passenger side front bumper and quarter panel made contact with the Explorer, said police. As a result of the impact, the Explorer rotated clockwise and came to rest partly off the road, police said.

The Hyundai rotated clockwise and moved forward into the Explorer’s front end, said police.

The driver of the Hyundai shifted into reverse and accelerated the car off the road into a fence, police said.

Both drivers were transported to Kennedy University Hospital by way of Washington Township Ambulance. No information about their injuries was available.
Hurffville-Cross Keys Road remained closed for about two hours.
The crash is being investigated.
