WOODBURY — Authorities are investigating the apparent theft of more than $50,000 in tax and utility payments from Woodbury City Hall.

According to sources close to the investigation, the thefts started in late 2013. The investigation was started in late October, 2014.

Asked about the thefts, Woodbury Administrator Michael Theokas said they were discovered during an internal audit.

With assistance from the city auditor and the state Division of Local Government Services, the city has already put in place new policies, internal controls and procedures to minimize the chance similar thefts can happen in the future, Theokas said.

He also said the city’s insurance carrier had been alerted and that the city expects full reimbursement.

The city is being aided in the investigation by the police department, the Gloucester County Prosector’s Office and the Division of Local Government Services, said Theokas.

“We’re doing everything we can to identify” the thief, Theokas said.
